Inter Miami made a performance to forget on Tuesday night against the Chicago Fire. The Herons lost 5-3, meaning they are out of the Supporters’ Shield race, and the Easter Conference first place doesn’t depend on them anymore.
Las Garzas had the opportunity to close a beautiful season: Supporters’ Shield, MLS Cup, and winning their conference, but now it's just a dream. Luis Suarez and Tomas Aviles’ goals kept Inter Miami alive, for a while, but the defensive issues are the Herons’ curse.
Not only is Inter Miami on the verge of starting a losing streak, but against Atlanta United, one of the toughest MLS teams, Las Garzas could play without their best player.
Inter Miami will face Atlanta United on October 11, while the Argentine national team will play Venezuela in a friendly match in Miami on October 10. But, ¿why is this happening?
Due to the FIFA Club World Cup, Inter Miami had to postpone a series of games to meet the tournament dates. That’s why you see the Herons playing during the week and the weekend, cause they need to recover from the postponed encounters.
The issue arises when fans realize that the Argentinian national team and Inter Miami have games scheduled just one day apart. The good part for Lionel Messi is that the two games are played in the city of Miami.
Las Garzas will play at Chase Stadium, while the other match will happen at Hard Rock Stadium. However, it would be insane for Messi to play two games in less than 24 hours, and in different competitions.
First, because both teams are not playing for the same stakes. The Albiceleste is playing a preparation match for next year’s World Cup, while Inter Miami is playing for the number of home games they could have in the playoffs.
Also, the impact of the Heron's captain is not the sme in both squads. Nowadays, Argentina doesn’t solely depend on Lionel Messi. However, Inter Miami does. Without their number ten, Las Garzas will struggle more to find a good rhythm against Atlanta United.
Although Inter Miami has the upper hand in this bet, since Argentina’s national team match is just a friendly, Lionel Scaloni, in talks with Lionel Messi, could decide not to call him up in order to give priority to his club team to prosper in the MLS regular season.
But until the official list is released, we won’t know the answer.
