The Barcelona election process has officially started, starting with Joan Laporta’s resignation as the club’s president.

Laporta is seeking to be re-elected as the next Barcelona president, but is facing stiff competition from Victor Font.

In an election that will dictate the roadmap for Barcelona going forward, former players like Xavi Hernandez and Lionel Messi have become a crucial theme.

But while Xavi is siding with Font in this election, Messi has remained tight-lipped so far, even though he does not have a great relationship with Laporta and every reason to back Font as well.

Messi’s stance in Barcelona election

According to Diario SPORT, Messi has made his stance clear in the ongoing Barcelona election process.

The Argentine has decided he won’t take part in or influence the election. As such, he won’t be meeting with any of the candidates, including Font, even though the latter has openly admitted the first thing he will do after winning is to call Messi.

The report does confirm that Messi’s relationship with Laporta is severed. But the Argentine will still not vote in this election.

This is a significant departure from recent elections, as Messi has often taken part in the process and voted.

The Inter Miami star has also decided not to mention any of the candidates by name, knowing he may play a huge role in swaying the election.

However, the report does point out that Messi may take part in the next Barcelona election, either through open endorsements or even candidacy.

The primary reason he is not taking part in this election is that the player is too busy with his life in the United States, where he is an active player for Inter Miami. This could be an entirely different story come the next election.
