Lionel Scaloni says Lionel Messi will decide on whether to play at the 2026 World Cup, keeping the question open. The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July.

According to L'Équipe, Argentina were unable to play the Finalissima against Spain because of the conflict in Iran, and instead face Mauritania and Zambia in friendlies during this international window. Scaloni has named 28 players, including Messi.

The captain, 38, has not formally confirmed his participation. Scaloni said he would do all he can for him to be there, but the choice depends on Messi’s mindset and fitness.

For now the signs are encouraging. He has scored five goals in six matches in all competitions for Inter Miami. After last year’s niggles and rest periods, he has remained cautious and has refused to look ahead to 2026.

In private, Messi has said he will wait until he is sure he is in the right condition to defend the world title. Scaloni added that many beyond Argentina want to see him there, that he has earned the right to decide calmly, and that there is no rush. He said they hope the answer is yes, but he cannot add more.
