England’s Euro 2025 winning women’s football team have been shortlisted for the Sports Personality of the Year Team of the Year award after another memorable summer for the Lionesses.

Lionesses nominated for Sports Personality Team of the Year prize

Sarina Wiegman’s side retained their European Championship title in July following a dramatic penalty shootout victory over world champions Spain in the Euro 2025 final.

The achievement marked the first time a senior England football team had won a major international trophy on foreign soil.

England’s journey through the knockout stages was defined by resilience. They conceded first in all three matches and became the only team in European Championship history to take three different games to extra time.

Substitutes played decisive roles at key moments as England repeatedly found a way back into matches.

That persistence helped them become only the second nation to successfully retain a European Championship title and has earned them a place on the Team of the Year shortlist.

England’s places have been rewarded with awards and nominations ever since. A number of Lionesses have been shortlisted for The Best Women’s Player award, which will be handed out on Tuesday night.

Who else has been nominated for Team of the Year?

England Women’s rugby union has been nominated after winning the Women’s Rugby World Cup in September.

The European Ryder Cup team have also been nominated after beating the United States 15-13.

The shortlist was selected by a panel drawn from across sport and media. It included 2014 Rugby World Cup winner Maggie Alphonsi, former England footballer Anita Asante, double Paralympic gold medal winning sprinter Libby Clegg, former world champion boxer Carl Frampton and 2009 World Cup winning cricketer Ebony Rainford Brent.

Last year, the Team of the Year honour was awarded to rugby league side Wigan Warriors.

Voting is now open for the Team of the Year award at Sports Personality of the Year 2025. The winner The winner will be announced during the Sports Personality of the Year programme, broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Thursday 18 December.

Women’s football stars up for Sports Personality awards

England players also feature across the individual awards. Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton are both nominated for Sports Personality of the Year.

Spain’s Mariona Caldentey is shortlisted for the overseas award while Michelle Agyemang is nominated for Young Sports Personality of the Year.
