Lions lead Championship for high turnovers

Millwall sit in the Championship playoff places, and their aggressive press has helped them register more high turnovers than any other side in the division this season.

Alex Neil’s team are sixth, level on points with fifth-placed Hull, and return to action after the international break with a trip to Portsmouth on Saturday.

Under Neil, the Lions have hunted in packs, and their pressing numbers make for strong reading.

Second only to Sheffield United (10.4) in PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action), Millwall are refusing to let opponents settle in their defensive third, and their 123 high turnovers are the most in the Championship.

The south London club will aim to sustain that level of intensity, though there’s still scope to improve when it comes to converting those high regains into chances.

So far, Millwall have scored only once directly from a high turnover, and they sit toward the lower end of the league for the percentage of shots taken after forcing one.

While Ipswich (23%) and Middlesbrough (21%) frequently turn high turnovers into shooting opportunities, Millwall (11.38%) have managed an attempt on goal just over once in every ten occasions.
