Newcastle were looking to win at Liverpool in the Premier League for the first time since 16th April 1994, when goals from Rob Lee and Andrew Cole gave them a 2-0 win, but were unable to end that sequence despite getting off to a great start.

The Magpies had already come the closest to scoring through Harvey Barnes before Gordon struck at the Kop end to give his side a deserved lead - but Ekitike soon levelled, then nudged his side ahead before the break, and Wirtz and Konaté wrapped up the points for the Reds in the second half.

Liverpool created the first real opening in the 17th minute when Ekitike turned and let fly from outside the box, but Nick Pope got down to his right to hold.

Moments afterwards, Mohamed Salah raced onto a Dominik Szoboszlai pass from just inside his own half but 35-year-old Kieran Trippier stuck diligently to his task to prevent the Egyptian from getting a strike away.

Trippier, Barnes and Gordon came in for Sven Botman, Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade as Eddie Howe rotated his squad after the Magpies' draw at Paris Saint-Germain.

In the 26th minute, after Barnes had been brought down by Ryan Gravenberch on the edge of the box, Lewis Hall rolled the free kick into the path of Barnes, whose strike crashed against the woodwork.

Ekitike brought another save from Pope as he was slid through by Gravenberch and went for a chip, but it was beaten away by the Newcastle netminder.

Then came the opening goal as Gordon finished off a superb United move, drilling right-footed into the net.

Gordon then saw another effort saved by Alisson Becker as Howe's men pushed for a second - but after good work from Wirtz, Ekitike swept home the equaliser in the 41st minute.

And two minutes later the Frenchman doubled his tally, drifting in from the left and finishing brilliantly beyond Pope.

Alexis Mac Allister headed over from a Szoboszlai flag-kick in first-half stoppage time then Ekitike screwed horribly wide at the beginning of the second half after capitalising on a Dan Burn mistake.

In the 56th minute, Anthony Elanga attempted to squeeze a shot beyond Alisson after a neat move, but the Liverpool keeper saved.

Then the Brazilian made a stunning low stop to push away a left-footed strike from Barnes after Malick Thiaw headed the ball into the winger's path.

Liverpool's third came, therefore, somewhat against the run of play as Salah danced into the box and cut the ball back for Wirtz, whose shot went in off the post.

Salah slotted wide after outpacing Hall as the Reds almost added another to add insult to injury, before United introduced Woltemade, Yoane Wissa and Jacob Murphy in a triple change.

Gordon zipped an effort just wide in the 78th minute after bringing down a raking Thiaw pass and chancing his arm.

But his and United's luck was out, and the Konaté's injury-time fourth ensured that the 31-year-long wait for a league victory at Anfield goes on.
