Liverpool will be able to activate a £52m agreement this summer.

Richard Hughes oversaw one of the most expensive rebuilds in Liverpool’s history as the club looked to reshape the squad for a new era.

He broke the club's transfer record twice, bringing in big names like Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.

But so far Liverpool are not reaping the rewards of his investments.

Many of the players brought in are long-term rather than short-term fixes. They are young players who will develop over time. Because of that, the real success of Hughes’ recruitment strategy may only become clear over the next few seasons, once those players have had time to settle, grow into the system, and make a sustained impact on the team.

However, that doesn't mean Liverpool shouldn't be better. It's not an excuse for the head-coach, but more so looking at the bigger picture for Hughes.

His rebuild has only just begun. And it will continue this summer.

Hughes' focus will shift further down the pitch. Strengthening the defence will be a major priority despite the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet.

The young centre-back is viewed as a promising long-term addition, but the overall defensive situation means further reinforcements are likely to be required at Anfield.

Ibrahima Konate is entering the final months of his contract and there has been little progress in negotiations over a new deal, making a departure increasingly likely.

If he does leave, Liverpool would need another high-level centre-back to maintain depth and quality in the position.

There are also longer-term considerations. Club captain Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both under contract until 2027, and could both depart come the end of next season.

As a result, recruitment this summer could focus on both immediate cover and players capable of forming the defence for years to come.
