Liverpool and Bristol City share points at Prenton Park | OneFootball

With both sides struggling for form, Liverpool welcomed Bristol City to Prenton Park. The two sides last met back in January 2020 with Liverpool coming away with a one-goal victory. The hosts headed into the tie having won four of their opening nine games. Bristol meanwhile had won just a single match from their opening run of games, leaving them with a points tally of four. So with both teams needing a result, who would come out on top?

How it went

It was the hosts who dominated much of the first half as Bristol City struggled to find a foothold in the tie. Despite several good chances for Matt Beard’s side, the visitors were able to withstand the pressure to send the two teams in goalless at the break.

An action-packed start to the second half saw two goals inside twelve minutes. Amalie Thestrup kicked the goal-scoring action off in the 50th minute. A ball across the area allowed the No.17 to backheel the ball beyond Teagan Micah to give Lauren Smith’s side the lead.

The visitor’s joy was short-lived however as Sophie Roman Haug levelled the scoreline just seven minutes later. Nodding the ball home from the goalline, the Norweigan’s equaliser offered the Reds a route back into the tie with just over half an hour left.

Ultimately the game would finish in a one-all draw with both teams taking a single point from the clash. The draw saw Liverpool finish the weekend sitting fifth in the table whilst the visitors occupied the eleventh spot.

Liverpool will finish 2023 with back-to-back away days. A League Cup Merseyside derby will be followed by a tough visit to face Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village.

Bristol City will round out the year with two home fixtures in the Continental Cup and the domestic league. Their home clash against Reading will be followed by a blockbuster match up against Emma Hayes’ Chelsea.
