The right-back came off the bench in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Sunday for his first appearance since he announced he would be leaving the club this summer as a free agent.

It was a mixed reception at best for Alexander-Arnold, with plenty of fans booing as he replaced Conor Bradley and then again when he touched the ball.

Robertson was asked about the treatment of his team-mate after the match, and he paid tribute to Alexander-Arnold for making him a better player during their time together at Liverpool.

"There’s a lot of emotion around it,” Robertson said. “It’s crucial in these moments that I don’t tell you how to feel and you don’t tell me how to feel about it.

“All I can tell you is how I feel about it. First of all, I’m disappointed to lose my best mate, and we’ve done it all together. He's an amazing player and an amazing person.

“He’s made me a better player, that’s from the bottom of my heart. He's took me to levels I never knew existed. He kept pushing me through the good years and he’s made a choice.

“His legacy at this club is there for everyone to see, the trophies he’s won and the moments he’s had in history will always be there. It is an emotional decision and Trent... it’s not been an easy one. But he’s made the decision.

“It’s not nice to see a friend get booed and it wasn’t nice, but we can’t tell people how to act. I can tell you how I feel about it, I’m extremely proud of what he’s done for this club. I love him as a friend, I love him as a player and he’ll be missed as one of my best friends in the game.

“That's how I feel about it and I'm not going to tell anyone else how to feel about it."

Robertson assisted Cody Gakpo’s opener against Arsenal and then thought he had snatched a winner with the final kick, only for the referee to rule it out for a foul.

The left-back was seen speaking to Alexander-Arnold as he came off the pitch at half-time and, quizzed on that conversation, Robertson revealed the Englishman was congratulating him for the assist.

"We're always delighted for each other with assists and contributing, it has been a huge part of our game for the eight years that we have played together,” Robertson said.

“When he came up at half-time, I could see his big smile. We’ve always had that laugh and a joke with each other and it was nice to see him coming up to me for once."
