Liverpool are reportedly ‘best positioned’ in the race to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.

Isak is on the radar of Europe’s top teams after another impressive campaign at St James’ Park. The Swedish striker has 17 goals in 24 appearances across all competitions and sits third in the race for the Premier League’s Golden Boot.

His performances for Newcastle have piqued the interest of Arsenal, who are on the hunt for a number nine. However, Football Transfers are reporting that Liverpool are monitoring his situation and are ‘best positioned’ to secure a deal.

Arne Slot is considering a big bid for the 25-year-old, with Darwin Nunez having underwhelmed at Anfield and Diogo Jota enduring another injury-hit campaign.

Liverpool were quiet in last summer’s transfer window. The Reds brought in Federico Chiesa from Juventus for an initial fee of £10m, in addition to the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili who will link up with the Merseysiders from Valencia in the summer.

That lack of activity could free funds for Slot to invest this summer. Newcastle value Isak in excess of £100m. It would likely take a British transfer record fee to prise the forward from the North East.

Isak has scored 52 goals in 91 games for Newcastle since arriving from Real Sociedad for a club-record £63m in 2022. Last season, he became the first Newcastle player since Alan Shearer to score 20+ league goals in a top-flight campaign.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe again reiterated his side’s need to remain compliant with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) this month.

“From our side, we don’t want to lose players,” Howe said. “But we know that there is a reality to PSR and the ongoing managing of that situation.”
