Liverpool manager Arne Slot has provided an injury update on Hugo Ekitike, Alisson Becker and Federico Chiesa ahead of this weekend’s trip to Chelsea.
Ekitike had to come off in the second half of Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League after injuring himself while stretching for the ball.
Alisson Becker is facing weeks on the sideline after sustaining another hamstring injury during the game, while Federico Chiesa was left at home in midweek due to a minor injury.
In a boost for Liverpool, Slot confirmed that both Ekitike and Chiesa will partake in training on Friday ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge. The French striker has also been called up to the France national team by Didier Deschamps, raising hopes that his concern is not that serious.
“Hugo is going to train again today, let’s see where he is. The same can be said for Frederico. It depends on how fast the recovery goes,” Slot told the media at his pre-match press conference.
It was reported on Thursday that Alisson could miss up to six weeks of action with his latest setback. Although Slot did not confirm an exact timeline for his return, he did reveal that he won’t be going on international duty with Brazil and is unlikely to be fit to face Manchester United at Anfield later this month.
“I will be surprised if he will be there for the first game after the international break,” the Dutchman said. “From there on things can go a bit faster, a bit slower. It’s difficult to say.”
The 33-year-old missed ten games last season with an hamstring injury. Slot could not confirm if he has suffered a recurrence of the same problem.
“I’m not a doctor, so I can’t tell you if it’s every time the same. I’m mainly interested in is can he [Alisson] play on the weekend and how long is it going to take? There are other people in the club who can give you a better answer to your question.”
Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to make his Premier League debut in Alisson’s place on Saturday.
