Liverpool’s summer planning has taken on another layer of intrigue after TEAMtalk reported that AC Milan are considering an ambitious move for sporting director Richard Hughes.
The Italian giants are looking to reshape their football structure after a disappointing campaign and, according to TEAMtalk, Hughes is one of the names on their radar. Bournemouth’s Tiago Pinto is also understood to be under consideration.
For Liverpool, the timing is far from ideal. Hughes has only been in place at Anfield for a relatively short period, but his role is central to what promises to be a hugely important transfer window under Arne Slot.
TEAMtalk report that Milan have made sweeping changes behind the scenes, with head coach Massimiliano Allegri, CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare and head of recruitment Geoffrey Moncada all departing.
Senior advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic remains involved and is said to be helping RedBird Capital founder Gerry Cardinale identify new leadership figures.

Hughes is viewed as an attractive candidate because of his growing reputation in Premier League recruitment and his personal links with Italy. He grew up in Milan, spent time in Atalanta’s academy and speaks fluent Italian.
That background gives the story more substance than a routine recruitment link. Milan are not simply looking at a Premier League executive, they are looking at someone who understands the Italian game, the English market and the demands of operating at elite level.
TEAMtalk state that Hughes recently rejected interest from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal and remains focused on Liverpool’s summer business.
That will reassure supporters, particularly given how much work needs to be done at Anfield. Liverpool are coming off a trophyless campaign under Slot and the squad still requires careful attention.
Recruitment will be judged heavily this summer. Supporters want clarity, conviction and a clear sense of what type of team Liverpool are trying to become under their head coach.
Hughes’ reputation has grown because of his work at Bournemouth and the belief that he can identify value in difficult markets. TEAMtalk also point to his involvement in moves for Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike as examples of why he is admired.
Whether Milan formalise their interest remains to be seen. TEAMtalk make clear that no final decision has been made and that the Serie A club are still assessing candidates.
Pinto’s name being included also suggests Milan are keeping their options open. His experience at Roma and Bournemouth makes him another logical contender for a club trying to modernise its operation.
For Liverpool, the priority is obvious. Hughes needs to be fully focused on delivering the right recruitment strategy this summer.
Sporting directors rarely attract the same public attention as managers or players, but their influence is enormous. They shape squads, control market strategy and help define the direction of a club.
Liverpool have been through enough change in recent years. They need their football operation to feel settled, decisive and aligned.
Milan’s interest is flattering, but Liverpool’s need is greater. This summer could shape the next stage of the Slot era and Hughes has to be at the heart of it.
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this is not the kind of story anyone wanted to read at this point of the summer.
There is already enough scrutiny around Slot, the squad and the club’s recruitment strategy. Adding speculation around Hughes only increases the feeling that Liverpool are entering another important period with too many moving parts.
That said, Milan’s interest should not be dismissed as meaningless. If a club of that size is looking at Hughes, it tells you his reputation carries weight. His Italian background makes the link logical and his Premier League experience makes him attractive to a club trying to rebuild properly.
The concern for fans is not necessarily that Hughes will leave. It is that Liverpool cannot afford any loss of focus. This summer needs to be sharp. The club need to address weaknesses, improve attacking patterns, strengthen key areas and make sure Slot has a squad capable of competing properly.
Hughes still has to prove himself fully at Anfield, but he has an important job to do. Milan can admire him from distance. Liverpool need him locked in, decisive and delivering.
