One way or another, Anthony Gordon's immediate future will be resolved next week amid talk of a move to Liverpool before the summer transfer window closes.

A saga that came as somewhat of a surprise first occurred when the former Everton winger was linked with a return to Merseyside prior to the profit and sustainability rules deadline in June, but a combination of the Magpies' asking price and insistence on inserting Jarell Quansah into a swap deal, saw the Reds walk away from negotiations.

It was then revealed that a different swap deal that would have seen versatile defender Joe Gomez head to St James' Park for £45m and Gordon going in the opposite direction for £75m was on the table, but ultimately, nothing materialised.

Despite this and Newcastle CEO Darren Eales previously telling the Chronicle Live that he expects Gordon and the club's other prized assets to stay put this summer, talk of a move to Anfield for the England international simply refuses to go away.

Whilst Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, understandably, wants to keep hold of Gordon, he may have handed the Merseyside giants a glimmer of hope that a deal could yet happen after refusing to rule out a late exit.

"I have been in the game too long to make those statements," Howe said as quoted by the Daily Express. "What I will say is, from my part and the club’s part, we will do everything we can to keep our best players, but I am not a fortune teller.

"As managers, we learn to live with it in this world because we have to. But it’s not ideal, there is a lot going on."

In truth, the Reds' hopes of signing Gordon this summer largely depend on outgoings. Considering it's an area where they have plenty of options, it's assumed that at least one current forward would have to be sacrificed in order to make space.

So with it looking almost certain that Luis Diaz is going nowhere, it would be a huge surprise if Gordon makes a sensational return to Merseyside before the summer transfer window closes.
