Liverpool have gone through their fair share of players over the last few years.

And, although their spending didn't really get to that high of a level, last summer, that changed.

Arne Slot and Richard Hughes tried to upgrade Liverpool's ranks in just one window with the Anfield outfit breaking the English transfer record twice.

But, in order for them to be able to do this, they needed to move many of their players on, which they did.

And now, since the club need to spend even more money to get them back to their best, more players are expected to leave.

However, some have actually already exited for free, much like one of the Reds' cult-heroes who could be about to make a rather unexpected move.

Rhys Williams is on trial with New York Red Bulls

Rhys Williams is a player that Liverpool fans will never forget.

Even though the Englishman hasn't played for Liverpool since the 2020/21 season, he will forever remain a cult-hero in the Reds' history books.

Williams, alongside Nat Phillips helped steer the Anfield outfit out of their defensive injury crisis during the 2020/21 season.

The duo were called up to the first-team by Jurgen Klopp after Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez were both ruled out with season-long injuries.

Nobody expected much from the two centre-backs but, considering this was their first taste of top-flight football, they did astonishingly well.

Since then, Williams hasn't had the best of luck and found himself released from his contract at L4 and, now that he's on the search for a new club, a surprise team have just entered the transfer chase.

"Liverpool defender Rhys Williams, who will officially leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June, is currently on trial at New York Red Bulls," James Pearce wrote.

"Great opportunity for him to impress as he seeks a new challenge this summer."

Rhys Williams needs to take this opportunity and prove his worth

Even though it was around five years ago when Williams last played for Liverpool, the quality he had was more than clear.

Since then, several loan spells have occurred with the most recent seeing him ply his trade for Morecambe back in the 2024-25 campaign.

He did manage to net a couple of goals that season and also featured in 38 games across all competitions but, from that point on, he's never really been handed another chance.

That's why his current trial with New York Red Bulls could be exact break he needed to prove his worth.

He'd be moving away from England and testing himself in a completely new environment, which, at this point in his career, could be exactly what he needs.

Obviously, it's only a trial so the MLS side haven't made him an offer just yet but, if he re-finds his form and proves his worth, there's no reason why he won't be able to find a new place to call home.
