Arsenal and Liverpool clashed in the biggest game of the FA Cup third round, after holders Manchester City made light work of Huddersfield Town amongst other results.
Read all about it here.
Scorers: Kiwior 80′
Arsenal’s season appears to be teetering on the brink after a third consecutive loss saw them knocked out of the FA Cup at the hands of Liverpool, and they only have themselves to blame after wasting countless chances.
The game got off to a ferocious start, with both sides looking to play and probably avoid a replay being added to a congested fixture schedule.
Arsenal were by far the stronger, however, creating several good openings inside the opening 10 minutes. Reiss Nelson could have done better after receiving a brilliant long-range ball from Aaron Ramsdale.
Soon after, Kai Havertz tested Alisson with a curling shot before Martin Ødegaard cracked the cross bar from inside the box. The Gunners really should have taken the lead with Liverpool on the ropes early on.
Liverpool settled after this somewhat but were largely reduced to playing in spurts as Arsenal continued to dominate the ball. With Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah absent amongst others, it perhaps was not too surprising.
Arsenal’s noted lack of a top-class no.9 was evident across the first half, with Havertz taking far too much time to get his shot away after being played in by Ødegaard. Declan Rice’s pressing in the lead up to that chance was excellent, it must be added.
Ben White had Arsenal’s next attempt, hammering a fierce drive from the edge of the box at Alisson, who did well to turn it away. From the resulting corner, Havertz, again, had a glorious chance to open the scoring, heading wide.
Liverpool’s best effort came just before half-time, Trent Alexander-Arnold smacking the cross bar with an excellent strike, just as he did in the league game just over two weeks ago.
The second half started as the first ended, but with Liverpool being more involved in goal attempts, Darwin Núñez flashing a right-footed strike just past Ramsdale’s post.
Coming off the bench, Gabriel Martinelli provided a much-needed spark for Arsenal, skinning Trent Alexander-Arnold but being stopped before he could do further damage.
Liverpool came so, so close to scoring with less than 15 minutes remaining. Luis Díaz’s shot was turned away excellently by Ramsdale and from the corner that followed, Diogo Jota’s header hit the bar.
The Reds did take the lead in the 80th minute, Jakub Kiwior heading into his own net from a dangerous, in-swinging Alexander-Arnold free kick.
Arsenal’s comeback mounted to little, and Liverpool sealed the deal in injury time, Díaz smashing home in fine style after a break from defence.
The questions are building for Arteta while Klopp and co. go marching on.
Scorers: Foden 32′ 65′, Alvarez 37′, Bobb 58′, Doku 74′
Manchester City showed their class as they beat Huddersfield 5-0 with Kevin De Bruyne returning from injury.
Pep Guardiola’s side were in complete control early on with Jack Grealish looking dangerous down the left-hand side but there was a big blow for the hosts as Manuel Akanji came off injured on 15 minutes.
Eventually City’s class showed as Phil Foden buried an effort from a tight angle after good work by Julian Alvarez.
After the break the hosts went further ahead as Oscar Bobb’s deflected effort wrong-footed the goalkeeper and went in off the underside of the crossbar.
Arguably the biggest cheer of the afternoon however came as De Bruyne returned to action after exactly five months on the sidelines.
City were moving through the gears now and got their fourth as a lovely team move was finished off by Foden for his second of the afternoon.
De Bruyne was then involved in City’s fifth as he crossed for Jeremy Doku, who tapped in at the back.
Scorers: Bowen 4′; Conway 61′
Bristol City were much the better side as they claimed a 1-1 draw with West Ham at the London Stadium.
It took the Hammers just four minutes to take the lead as Jarrod Bowen raced in, rounded the goalkeeper, and finished well.
Bristol City weren’t taking this tie lying down though, and in the second half got a deserved equaliser.
Tommy Conway was the goalscorer as he beat the offside trap and finished off a fine team move on the hour mark.
Scorers: Ampadu 37 90′, Bamford 47′
Patrick Bamford scored the goal of the third round as Leeds beat Peterborough 3-0.
Peterborough were the form side in League One coming into this clash with Leeds claiming just two wins from their last five games.
Patrick Bamford was at the heart of everything Leeds were doing well early on but saw two good efforts saved before the 10 minute mark.
The Championship side eventually did get their opener just before half time as Bamford played in Ethan Ampadu who finished with aplomb.
Into the second half and immediately Bamford netted the second of the game with a stunning volleyed effort from 25 yards.
Ampadu confirmed the win in the dying moments as the Wales international netted his second for the club with a smart header.
Scorers: Dominguez 39′ Gibbs-White 56′; Gabriel 25′, Morgan 27′
But a potential upset was on the cards after 25 minutes as Jordan Gabriel headed home after good work by Karamoko Dembele.
Blackpool then doubled their advantage just a few moments later as Albie Morgan found space inside the area and smashed home an effort.
Forest halved their deficit just before the break however as Nico Dominguez netted with his second goal in as many games.
Into the second half and Forest got themselves level on 56 minutes as Morgan Gibbs-White finished well from the edge of the area.
Monday sees the fourth round draw followed by Wigan’s clash with Manchester United.
