Liverpool left it late to claim a dramatic 2-1 victory over Everton in the first Merseyside derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Virgil Van Dijk heading home a stoppage-time winner to settle a fiercely contested encounter.
Everton made the brighter start and threatened early through Beto, who forced a strong save from Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The hosts thought they had taken the lead when Iliman Ndiaye finished from close range, but the effort was ruled out following a VAR review for offside in the build-up.
The Reds made the most of that reprieve midway through the first half. Cody Gakpo slipped a precise pass through to Mohamed Salah, who kept his composure to guide a low finish beyond Jordan Pickford and put the visitors ahead against the run of play.
The Toffes responded well after the break and deservedly equalised when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall delivered a dangerous low cross that Beto converted from close range. The contest became increasingly physical as both sides pushed for a winner.
With the game heading toward a draw, Liverpool found a decisive late moment. Dominik Szoboszlai swung in a corner deep into stoppage time and Van Dijk rose highest to power home the winner, sealing a dramatic derby triumph for the visitors
