Liverpool have finally got their man. Late on transfer deadline day, the Reds secured Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old Swede goes down as the third most-expensive player in history - with the fee reported as £130m - after an initial bid of £110m was rejected at the start of August.

He will be a Liverpool player until 2031 - following an exhausting transfer pursuit which went right to the last knockings. But now Liverpool have a new No9 - one of the world’s finest strikers no less.

Newcastle are predictably enraged at how it all played out. The forward claimed broken promises and ruptured relationships led him to demand a departure from the club and he refused to play in each of their first three Premier League fixtures of the season.

Isak gets his wish - Newcastle relent

Isak had earlier failed to report for preseason duty on the Magpies’ Asian tour. Facing the prospect of holding on to a disgruntled player against his will - the Geordies relented.

They bought Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa - eventually ceding to Isak’s demands and accepting Liverpool’s improved second bid.

Of course Newcastle are unhappy. They have watched helplessly as their best player turned down every attempt to make him stay and force through a move to the Premier League’s biggest club.

Isak 'creates the blueprint' admit Newcastle

The message it sends is not good for Eddie Howe’s side - as it demonstrates that the pathway for an exit exists even for players under long-term contracts.

That’s according to a new report in the Daily Telegraph - which claims that other Newcastle stars will now feel emboldened to act out and secure a move.

“Isak would create the blueprint, he would show everyone how you got Newcastle to buckle,” the report quoted one club insider as saying.

“This is about far more than just Isak, it is about what sort of club we want to be and how we are perceived, by players, agents and rival clubs.

“We have to stay strong and we have to resist. If we don’t, other players will think they can do the same.”
