Huddersfield Town's strong start to 2026-27 could be disrupted if the Premier League giants take their interest in a Terriers loanee further.

Liverpool are understood to be eyeing Huddersfield Town's loanee goalkeeper Matty Young, who's had an impressive start to his spell at The Accu Stadium.

With a 3-1 win at Burton Albion keeping them in third place in the League One table, Huddersfield Town remain in the pack chasing a return to the Championship in 2026-27. The Terriers are only one point off an automatic promotion place, with just one defeat from their opening eight games of the season.

But there is potential for disruption ahead. Following a disappointing tenth-placed finish in the table last season, Huddersfield undertook work on their first-team squad over the summer which included bringing in two loanees. But one of those players, teenage goalkeeper Matty Young, is already getting the attention of a Premier League giant, which could cause head coach Martin Drury a headache in the January transfer window.

On his Patreon on Sunday morning, journalist Alan Nixon reports that Liverpool are keeping an eye on the 19-year-old Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Matty Young, who has impressed with his early-season performances for the Terriers since joining the club on loan from Sunderland during the summer.

Nixon reports that Young's strong start in League One has attracted the interest of the Merseyside giants, who are looking for a young goalkeeper to bring through with a view to making him their permanent number one choice. He confirms that the goalkeeper impressed on loan in League Two with Salford City last season, and has handled the step up to League One impressively.

Nixon also points out the issue that Huddersfield could have in this case. In saying that, "Sunderland have Young under contract, but a offer from a Premier League giant would be hard for all parties to refuse", he highlights the fact that they would have no say over whether Young stays with them or not.

An early move from Liverpool could see the goalkeeper move to Anfield in the January transfer window, and this would leave Huddersfield scrambling for another goalkeeper, though it should be added that if Young is being considered as one for the future, his path could be cleared to complete the 2026-27 season in League One with the Terriers.

With two other goalkeepers on their books, in the form of Jak Alnwick and Nik Tzanev, there wouldn't be an immediate goalkeeping crisis at Huddersfield Town were Liverpool to step in and sign Matty Young from Sunderland, but goalkeeping a position in which continuity can be hugely beneficial, so it's difficult to see that a move for him wouldn't be a disruption to the Terriers' season.

But Young is extremely highly rated. He's already on his fourth loan spell away from The Stadium of Light. His first came in the non-league game at Darlington, where he won their Young Player of the Year award in 2024, and since then he's had two spells with Salford City in League Two before making the step up to League One with Huddersfield in the summer. His appearance in their 3-1 win at Burton marked his 100th as a senior player, an impressive amount of experience for such a young player.

Huddersfield Town will have to keep a close eye on this developing situation. Should a transfer between Sunderland and Liverpool be agreed for him, they may be able to keep him until the end of this season. They could certainly make a strong case that his development has continued at a healthy level in League One this season.

But it does remain the case that this is one of the inherent risks with taking any player in on loan. If they impress, they could always be recalled by their parent club or, as has happened in this case, attract the interest of another. Huddersfield will be hoping that, whether a transfer between these two Premier League giants can be agreed for the young goalkeeper, they'll be entrusted with his further development for the remainder of this season.
