Richard Hughes Leaves Liverpool With Legacy Still Open to Debate

Richard Hughes has stepped down as Liverpool sporting director, bringing to an end a tenure that contained a Premier League title, extraordinary spending and enough upheaval to make any definitive judgement difficult.

Hughes is expected to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal after leaving Liverpool less than three years after arriving from Bournemouth in June 2024. His departure had been anticipated, yet its confirmation adds another significant change to a club already reshaped during 2026.

Hughes leaves having overseen some of the most expensive recruitment in Liverpool history.

Alexander Isak arrived for £125m, Florian Wirtz cost £116m and Bradley Barcola joined from Paris Saint-Germain for £123m. Hugo Ekitike and Jeremy Jacquet were also recruited during a period when Liverpool abandoned much of their previous financial caution.

Hughes said: “I’ll always follow and support the club with great affection, and I wish everyone involved nothing but success for this season and beyond.”

Those words close a chapter that began amid uncertainty following Jürgen Klopp’s departure in 2024.

Success Followed By Liverpool Decline

Hughes played an important role in appointing Arne Slot, a decision initially vindicated when Liverpool won the Premier League in 2024/25.

That achievement deserves to remain part of his record.

Liverpool declined dramatically the following season, finishing fifth before Slot was dismissed on 30 May 2026. Hughes subsequently helped appoint Andoni Iraola, a coach he already knew well from their time together at Bournemouth.

That sequence encapsulates much of the difficulty surrounding Hughes’ Liverpool legacy. His biggest decisions produced moments of success, followed quickly by demands for another rebuild.

Mike Gordon said: “Richard joined us at the start of a period of change, embracing that responsibility by leading our football operations department and overseeing recruitment while also providing valuable support to our coaching staff.

“The results we achieved in these areas during this period are testament to this contribution. Nevertheless, we respect Richard’s life choices and wish him and his family well in their next venture.”

Recruitment Record Faces Future Judgement

Liverpool spent £415m during the remarkable summer of 2025, before another major outlay brought Barcola to Anfield this year.

Those numbers make Hughes impossible to separate from Liverpool’s current squad.

Wirtz, Isak, Barcola, Ekitike and Jacquet represent enormous financial commitments. Whether those players eventually form the foundation of another successful Liverpool side will heavily influence how Hughes is remembered.

Recruitment executives are frequently judged too quickly because transfers rarely reveal their true value immediately. Hughes has left before several of his most important investments have reached anything resembling a final verdict.

Liverpool Enter Another Period Of Change

His exit also raises another uncomfortable question about continuity.

Liverpool are now searching for their fifth sporting director since 2022, following Michael Edwards, Julian Ward, Jorg Schmadtke and Hughes.

Edwards has also departed his wider FSG football role, while the ownership structure has changed following the sale of a minority stake to Amit Bhatia’s 1892 Holdings consortium.

Liverpool therefore enter the Iraola era carrying expensive talent alongside considerable institutional change.

Hughes leaves for Al-Hilal with his Liverpool story unfinished. His decisions remain everywhere at Anfield, from the head coach to the players occupying the dressing room.

Only what happens next will determine whether his departure represents the end of an ambitious project or merely another change of personnel during Liverpool’s increasingly restless evolution.
