Liverpool could face a major battle to sign Mexican wonderkid Gilberto Mora, with the teenage sensation reportedly favouring a move to Spain over a switch to Anfield.
The 17-year-old has emerged as one of the most exciting young attacking midfielders in world football following his breakthrough performances for Club Tijuana and Mexico.
Liverpool have been monitoring Mora for some time and remain interested in bringing him to the Premier League. However, the Reds could struggle to convince the youngster if Real Madrid or Barcelona step up their pursuit.
According to Football Insider, Mora prefers to continue his career in Spain, with the two La Liga giants understood to be among his favoured destinations.
That represents a potential setback for Liverpool, who are competing against some of Europe’s biggest clubs for the teenager’s signature.
Mora has already attracted significant attention after impressing at the 2026 World Cup. His development has accelerated rapidly, and he has continued to produce impressive numbers for Tijuana this season.
The attacking midfielder has scored five goals and provided one assist in seven Liga MX appearances, underlining why his valuation has risen considerably.
Tijuana are reportedly seeking a fee of at least £40 million for their highly rated youngster, with the Mexican club expected to consider selling next summer.
Liverpool’s interest is therefore unlikely to disappear, particularly given their continued focus on recruiting elite young talent.
However, competition from Real Madrid and Barcelona could make negotiations much harder. Both clubs can offer Mora the opportunity to develop in Spain, which currently appears to be his preferred route into European football.
Liverpool have already contacted the player’s representatives, according to reports, but they may need to move quickly if they want to stay firmly in the race.
For now, Mora’s future remains uncertain, but his preference for Spain could be key in deciding where the highly rated teenager plays next.
