Liverpool are anxiously awaiting further news after club-record signing Alexander Isak appeared to suffer a serious leg injury during Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

The 26-year-old came on at the interval in place of Conor Bradley and made an immediate impact, breaking the deadlock in the 56th minute with a composed finish following a clever through ball from Florian Wirtz. However, moments after striking the ball, Isak was caught awkwardly by a sliding challenge from Micky van de Ven, leaving him grounded and unable to join in the celebrations.

Medical staff quickly attended to the forward, and he was eventually escorted from the pitch by two members of Liverpool’s medical team, with Jeremie Frimpong introduced as his replacement.

There is growing concern within the club over the severity of the damage to Isak’s lower leg. While a full diagnosis is still pending, the injury is believed to be serious and could rule him out for several months.

Earlier reports had already suggested Liverpool feared the Sweden international may have suffered a significant leg issue.

A prolonged absence would represent a major setback for both Liverpool and their £125 million signing, who netted only his second Premier League goal since completing a record-breaking summer move from Newcastle United.

Isak has started six league matches so far this season, along with three appearances in the Champions League. Fellow summer arrival Hugo Ekitike, who went on to score the decisive goal against nine-man Spurs, has settled more swiftly at Anfield.

Speaking after the match, head coach Arne Slot expressed optimism over the contributions of both Isak and Wirtz, another high-profile addition, and said he was hopeful the striker would not face an extended spell on the sidelines.

“I haven’t spoken to him about it yet but it’s a good thing he scored, a good goal assisted by Florian Wirtz,” Slot said. “I said players are getting better, the team is getting better.

“It wasn’t perfect today, especially the last 10 minutes but we pick up points and are developing in a way I want to see.

“That’s what we’d like to see happening a lot. A good finish, a good pass. Let’s not be too negative yet. We don’t know yet, let’s hope he is back with us soon.”
