Liverpool returns to Premier League action this weekend, aiming to kickstart their momentum after a much-needed international break. But Arne Slot will have to cope with a depleted squad. Florian Wirtz, the summer’s marquee signing, has been ruled out due to a muscle problem that could sideline him for several weeks. It’s a tough blow for the Reds, who are already without Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, as Slot confirmed in his press conference.

The Wirtz decision backed at the highest level of the club

Despite this setback, Liverpool has no regrets about signing Florian Wirtz. Club president Tom Werner reiterated the reasons that drove the club to go all-in for the German prodigy, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen. For Werner, Wirtz represents a rare opportunity.

"When you have the chance to sign a player of this caliber, you have to take it. Wirtz is exceptional, he could even be a Ballon d’Or contender," Werner told The Athletic in an excerpt featured in the book Walk On.

The club knows that once he recovers, Wirtz is expected to become a cornerstone of Slot’s project. Now, Liverpool can only hope that his injury won’t delay his central role for too long.
