When asked ahead of England's clash with San Marino which Three Lions player was his favourite, Alexander-Arnold said: "David Beckham.

"It was a very unique way he kicked the ball, body shape, so he always stood out."

Alexander-Arnold is one of Liverpool's first names on the team-sheet but he is struggling to cement his place in Gareth Southgate's XI, so how exactly can he do so?

"It's the million-dollar question in my mind," Alexander-Arnold explained. "Why hasn't it clicked yet?

"There's two very different roles, different responsibilities different personalities, different personnel.

"The best thing for me is feeling like I've got freedom all day.

"Of course I've got defensive responsibilities and I've got to play a part for the team but I've always felt I play my best football when I've been to just play."
