Liverpool Women goalkeeper Rafaela Borggrafe has joined Frauen-Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen on loan.
The 25-year-old German goalkeeper joined the Reds in the summer from SC Freiburg.
However, her appearances have been limited, and she recently underwent a six-match ban for using discriminatory language towards a teammate.
On Tuesday morning, Liverpool confirmed that Rafaela Borggrafe will spend the remainder of the 2025-26 season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen.
She joins a Leverkusen side who are third in the Frauen-Bundesliga standings.
Borggrafe’s departure comes after Liverpool strengthened their goalkeeping ranks with the signing of Jennifer Falk on loan.
Opportunities for Borggrafe would be limited, as Liverpool also have Rachael Laws in their goalkeeping ranks.
Borgraffe made three appearances in the WSL, in defeats to Manchester United in September and both London City Lionesses and Manchester City in October.
Her final appearance to date came in a League Cup win over Durham.
The Football Association opened up an investigation in September following an incident during a squad photoshoot on a pre-season training camp.
There was an allegation that Borggrafe had used language of a discriminatory nature towards a teammate.
Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor confirmed that Borgraffe had been serving a six-match ban during a press conference ahead of their FA Cup victory over the London Bees.
He said: “The FA has completed its thorough investigation and sanctioned the player with a six-game ban. That ban has been ongoing while we have been playing.
“I think the situation is the situation. The team and the club have acted in the appropriate way. We have supported the FA in its investigation.
“I would say it has dragged on a bit. That has been frustrating for everyone involved. We are happy now it is completed and have some actual details on what it looks like.”
The transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday night.
In terms of completed deals in the WSL January transfer window, Liverpool have been one of the busiest sides.
Liverpool have completed permanent deals for Alice Bergstrom, Aurelie Csillag, Anna Josendal and Denise O’Sullivan.
The Reds have also signed Jennifer Falk and Martha Thomas on loan.
Taylor’s side look to have already done their business during the January window. However, given their position at the bottom of the WSL table, it would be no surprise if they made one further addition before the window shuts.
