Liverpool could be without another key player for the Premier League run-in after goalkeeper Alisson suffered a head injury while on international duty with Brazil.
The 32-year-old was involved in a nasty collision with Colombian defender Davinson Sanchez during Thursday’s World Cup qualifier.
Alisson was still conscious after the collision, but he had to be taken off in the 78th minute as a precautionary measure.
The Brazilian keeper is set to undergo medical assessments to determine the extent of his injury, leaving Liverpool sweating over his long-term fitness.
The Reds are already dealing with an injury list that has grown at an alarming rate over the past couple of weeks.
Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley were also unavailable for the cup tie, and there’s no telling when either of them will return to action.
Ryan Gravenberch also picked up a knock at Wembley Stadium, forcing him to withdraw from the Netherlands squad for the international break.
Alisson now looks set to join that growing list, although the club is still waiting for a verdict from the medical team.
“Alisson suffered a head injury,” Brazil’s team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said (via The Mirror).
“He was replaced due to a suspected concussion, so now we will follow the protocol recommended by the CBF.
“He will undergo the recommended imaging tests. First, we will perform a CT scan, followed by a diffusion MRI.”
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot opted to deploy Caoimhin Kelleher ahead of Alisson in the EFL Cup final.
However, the Reds cannot afford to head into the final nine games of the season without their first-choice goalkeeper.
Slot’s side hold a commanding 12-point lead at the summit and are expected to go on and win the title, but alarm bells are ringing as key players continue to pick up injury issues.
Liverpool take on Everton after the international break and will hope Alisson is fit enough to feature in the highly anticipated Merseyside derby at Anfield.
