Liverpool have reportedly held talks with Crystal Palace over a move for Marc Guehi in the summer transfer window.

The centre-back’s future has been a source of speculation in recent months as he is in the final year of his contract with the Eagles.

Guehi has been linked with Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, but Liverpool are looking to beat them all to the signing.

According to The Times, the Reds have “opened talks” with Palace about a potential £35 million deal for the defender.

It is claimed that Liverpool would pay an initial £30m fee, plus £5m in add-ons as they seek to beef up their backline. The Athletic report that no offer has been made as of yet.

Additionally, the Merseyside outfit are “stepping up” their interest in Parma centre-half Giovanni Leoni. They are yet to make “club-to-club” contact, but believe the Italian is one of the best young players in Europe in his position.

Liverpool are looking to sign both Guehi and Leoni, not one or the other. With Joe Gomez sidelined with an injury and Jarell Quansah sold to Bayer Leverkusen, they only have two fit centre-backs in Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. The latter could also leave Anfield on a free transfer next summer, which is when his contract expires.

Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted this past weekend that they may have to sell Guehi before the transfer window closes.

“We’d have to (sell if a good offer came in),” Parish said following Sunday’s win over Liverpool in the Community Shield.

“For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it’s a problem. We had one bid (last summer) but Joachim (Andersen) went (to Fulham) and we couldn’t afford to lose both defenders.

“We had another bid in January but that was a difficult situation as well. The player had a point of view on that one. We’ll have to see what happens but it needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind.

“As far as people being here or not being here, if it’s the right decision for the club and for them — nobody can make anyone go — then there will be some changes, but we have to make smart ones.”
