Liverpool Injury Update: Jeremie Frimpong and Alexander Isak and More

Liverpool’s push for a Champions League place took a knock with a 2-1 stoppage time defeat to Manchester City at Anfield. The result tightened the margins in the top five race and left Arne Slot juggling availability across key positions. There were no fresh injury concerns from the match itself, though Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored from a free kick, was seen hobbling before half time and later received a red card for denying Erling Haaland a clear goalscoring opportunity.

His suspension removes a creative outlet for the next fixture and compounds a wider issue on the right side of defence, where Liverpool are already without their two preferred options. Squad management now becomes a week to week exercise, with minutes, recovery and risk carefully balanced.

Jeremie Frimpong Recovery Timeline

Jeremie Frimpong’s first season at Liverpool has been punctuated by fitness setbacks. The summer arrival was forced off early during the 6-0 Champions League win over Qarabag with a muscle injury and has not yet returned to full training. Ahead of the City game, Slot confirmed the Dutchman would “definitely not train” with the squad.

After the final whistle at Anfield, Slot provided a firmer outlook. “Jeremie for sure [will not play against Sunderland]. We knew that when he got injured, it was a few weeks.” Earlier, he had offered a slightly brighter note: “He is out for a few weeks,” the Liverpool boss said. “But [it’s] not as bad as we thought he would be out. It’s something positive from something not so positive.”

Liverpool are targeting a potential return away to Nottingham Forest on February 21, a date that would restore a natural right back option and ease the load on makeshift solutions.

Alexander Isak Rehab Progress

Alexander Isak’s absence has been felt in the attacking rotation since he suffered a fractured fibula after scoring in the 2-1 win at Tottenham before Christmas. The Swedish international required surgery on his ankle and leg following a heavy challenge by Micky van de Ven, one that Slot described as “reckless”.

The manager has been clear about the timeline. “It’s going to be a long injury, for a couple of months,” said Slot, who expects Isak to feature again before the end of the campaign. “It’s a big disappointment for him and, as a result, for us.”

A March 2026 return remains the working projection. If realised, Liverpool would regain a forward capable of stretching defences and sharing the scoring burden during a decisive phase of the season.

Defensive Depth and Bradley Blow

In defence, Liverpool continue to navigate a thin roster. Joe Gomez’s hip problem, sustained at Bournemouth, left Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as the only senior centre backs available. Slot admitted a quick comeback is unlikely. “I don’t expect Joe back for Wednesday, but you never know.,” he said. “Then he is back from being out for three weeks, would you play him now?” Brighton at home on February 14 is a tentative target.

Conor Bradley’s situation is more definitive. A significant knee injury suffered at Arsenal required surgery, with the club stating: “Liverpool FC can confirm Conor Bradley has sustained a significant knee injury. The right-back suffered the issue in the latter stages of Thursday night’s Premier League fixture away at Arsenal. Bradley will undergo surgery in the coming days and then begin a period of rehabilitation at the AXA Training Centre. No timeframe is being placed on his return to playing at this stage of the process.” His expected comeback sits in summer 2026.
