Andoni Iraola Confirms Bradley Barcola Fitness After Liverpool Debut Scare

Liverpool have no Bradley Barcola injury problem. That is the short version, and for now it is the important one.

The £123million summer signing was forced off an hour into his full debut against Atletico Madrid, prompting the usual anxiety. Team-mates gathered around him, medical staff came on, and the optics were poor. At a club balancing domestic pressure with Champions League demands, that sort of scene quickly creates noise.

According to Andoni Iraola, there is no issue worth escalating. “No, it is cramp. It is just cramp, there is no injury,” he said after Liverpool opened their European campaign with a comeback win.

That matters because Liverpool are back at Anfield against Fulham this weekend, and because Barcola has only just arrived. When a club spends £123million on a forward, nobody wants to hear about muscle problems in week one.

Bradley Barcola fitness explained

Iraola’s explanation was straightforward. This was not about damage, it was about conditioning. Barcola joined from Paris Saint-Germain without a proper pre-season workload, and Liverpool were still learning how much he could physically give.

“With Bradley, it’s about building his physical condition. We don’t really know, or we didn’t know until now, probably, how much he can play because he hasn’t had any minutes in pre-season for PSG.

“He played 30 the other day [and] today we had some question marks, how many minutes he can give us and probably now we know.”

That is sensible management, not spin. Players can look sharp in training and still hit a wall in competitive minutes. Barcola lasted an hour, and Liverpool now have a clearer line on his current level.

Iraola was also encouraged by what Barcola did in those minutes. The Frenchman got into the right areas and should have scored. For a wide attacker settling into a new side, that is a better indicator than aesthetic touches.

“I’m very happy because also he has had two very clear chances against the ‘keeper. He hasn’t scored, but I want him there.

“There is where he has to make the difference, arriving to those spots, those positions, and I’m very happy because in, I don’t know how many minutes he’s played, two times against the ‘keeper is a good sign with Bradley.”

Liverpool injury update before Fulham

Barcola was not the only player to come off. Milos Kerkez also needed treatment late on before being withdrawn, but the message from Iraola was the same. Fatigue, not injury.

“Milos and Bradley were just cramping [and] were just tired,” Iraola added. “I think I always want to do subs because of this, because you’ve given everything, you don’t have any more, perfect.

“We do the subs, not because you haven’t run and I have to sub you. So, I prefer when you’ve done everything you can and then we sub you because you cannot run anymore.”

That leaves Cody Gakpo as the more relevant concern ahead of Fulham. He missed the Atletico match with an adductor issue and, unlike Barcola, his availability remains uncertain.

“I don’t know [if he will be back for Fulham]. I hope so, but I don’t know. He doesn’t have a proper injury, but he finished with niggles in both of the abductors the other day,” Iraola revealed.

Fulham test comes quickly for Iraola

The schedule is the real problem here. Liverpool do not have the luxury of time, and Iraola made that clear. Recovery now dictates selection.

“We expected to have him for today, [but] it hasn’t been possible. It’s not a big thing, but the problem is we play here [again] in two days and a half.

“I think now is a moment of recovery in these two days. Let’s see how Bradley has finished, how Cody is [and] if he can give us some minutes. If not, Rio, Victor, I think today everyone has done a big effort.

“We need to recover, we need to regroup and think because in two days and a half we play again here [against] Fulham, it’s a very important game again for us. So, I hope we can have Cody with us, but I cannot guarantee it.”

So the situation is clear. Bradley Barcola fitness is not a problem, Milos Kerkez should be fine, and the real wait is on Cody Gakpo. For Liverpool, that is a manageable outcome.
