Reds sweating over key names ahead of Man Utd visit

Liverpool take on Manchester United as Premier League football returns after the international break this weekend, and the Reds have a number of injury concerns.

The Premier League champions have stuttered in recent weeks, falling to defeats by Crystal Palace and Chelsea, as well as a 1-0 loss at Galatasaray in the Champions League.

That means that they have suffered three consecutive defeats for the first time under Arne Slot’s management, but the Dutchman, looking to right the wrongs of previous outings, will be sweating over the fitness of some of his key stars.

Two senior players returned home early from international duty to worsen Slot’s worry, creating further doubts ahead of their encounter with United at Anfield.

Here’s a look at the latest Liverpool injury news...

Ryan Gravenberch

The Dutchman played just 45 minutes in the Netherlands’ 4-0 win over Finland at the weekend, with Ronald Koeman confirming that Gravenberch had been struggling with a hamstring niggle.

Gravenberch himself said that his half-time substitution was a precautionary measure to ensure that he did not make his problem worse.

Potential return date: October 19, vs Manchester United (H)

Ibrahima Konate

French centre-back Konate was substituted against Chelsea with an injury problem ahead of the international break.

He then joined up with the France squad despite confirming that he had an issue with his quad, and since then, the defender returned home at the weekend after he didn’t feature in France’s 3-0 win over Azerbaijan.

Upon returning to Merseyside, the central defender will be assessed to determine if he will be passed fit to start against the Red Devils.

Potential return date: Unknown

Alisson Becker

The Brazilian goalkeeper was taken off in the Reds’ 1-0 defeat by Galatasaray in the Champions League, and Slot said that it was “never good” to see a player go off the way Alisson had.

Liverpool’s No1 did not play for his country against South Korea last week, and won’t face Japan either.

That said, Slot is not overly confident on having his first-choice shot-stopper back for the visit of United.

"It depends on how fast the recovery goes, so it’s clear that he is not going to play for Brazil,” Slot told reporters ahead of the Chelsea loss.

"I will be surprised if he [Alisson] will be there for the first game after the international break. From there on things can go a bit faster or a bit slower. It's difficult to say the amount of days and weeks.

“For the upcoming games he will not be apart of us or the Brazil team.”

Potential return date: Late October

Wataru Endo

Japanese international Endo did not join his compatriots for their games against Paraguay and Brazil over this international break, with the national team releasing a confirmation statement last week.

“Japan National Team will be without Wataru Endo (Liverpool FC) due to injury in the Kirin Challenge Cup 2025 (October 10th vs. Paraguay in Osaka, October 14th vs. Brazil in Tokyo),” the statement read.

We are in the dark over the severity of Endo’s issue, and he could be in line for a return to action this weekend.

Potential return date: October 19, vs Manchester United (H)

Giovanni Leoni

New signing Leoni will be out for at least a year with a knee injury.

The teenager tored his ACL during the Reds’ 2-1 win over Southampton in the League Cup.

Slot confirmed his lengthy period on the sidelines.

“He’s not in a good place, of course,” the Dutchman said. “He tore his ACL which means that he will be out for around a year.

“Being so young, coming to a new country, playing so well in your first game, it’s very hard to take the positives. You always try to look at the positive side and that is that he is still so young.

“He still has so many years to go after he recovers from a terrible injury like that.”

Potential return date: 2026
