Liverpool interest confirmed, ex-Bayern star could head to Anfield | OneFootball

Liverpool do hold an interest in a former Bayern Munich star. That's according to Christian Falk, who shared more information.

Liverpool's transfer activity is on hold but the background work is still being done. The Reds, after all, lack depth all over the place after a strange summer that saw them fail to address several key areas.

What's the long-term situation at centre-back? Only two of the five options are contracted beyond this season. Is Kostas Tsimikas an option going forward? Is Jeremie Frimpong actually a right-back?

Can Alexander Isak hold down the fort until Hugo Ekitiké returns? Why are there four left-wingers? Why aren't they any right-wingers?

Then there's the midfield. Liverpool lack a holding midfielder and actually sold one of their senior options without replacing him as Curtis Jones joined Inter.

They will almost certainly move for a midfielder in January as a result. If not, there's an absolute guarantee on someone arriving next summer.

But one of their options is a surprise, to say the least.

Paul Wanner watched

Christian Falk claims Liverpool are watching PSV Eindhoven's Paul Wanner over a potential move. The former Bayern Munich player is still only 20 but impressed in the Eredivisie last season.

Now, Falk makes it clear that teams want to see more of Wanner before moving. Still, Liverpool are the only team other than Bayern that he feels confident naming. It's safe to say there's a strong degree of interest here.

But it's an interesting one. Wanner is another attack-minded midfielder, who can also operate on the wing. Liverpool have many of these - you can argue their entire midfield is made up of such players.

So this one is a surprise. We're not sure how Wanner would fit in as a midfielder who primarily looks to get shots off, though without a particularly high conversion rate.

Not that there isn't plenty of reason to think he's a top talent. Wanner gets plenty of shots off - around two per 90 minutes - and has a fantastic rate of getting them on target, sitting at 76 per cent.

That's very, very good and you can see the potential there for a real threat from deeper positions. But do Liverpool need that? Does that really improve the squad?

We're not sure and Wanner feels like a strange one to aim for, in all truth.
