Liverpool’s sporting situation could have major financial consequences. According to the BBC, failing to qualify for the next Champions League would mean a loss estimated at nearly £120 million for the English club.
This scenario remains possible after the Reds’ recent defeat away to bottom-placed Wolverhampton (2-1). Liverpool currently sit fifth in the league with 48 points, a precarious position as Chelsea could leapfrog them with a win at Villa Park against Aston Villa.
As a reminder, due to the recent performances of English clubs in European competitions, the Premier League has five Champions League qualifying spots this season.
