Liverpool’s midfield has too often looked like a unit with individual qualities but without enough collective authority. At 22, he also fits the right age profile. Liverpool should still be targeting players with energy, upside and resale value, especially if the fee is going to sit around £60m. That is a lot of money, but in today’s market it is the price of buying a high-level midfielder before he gets even more expensive.

The concern, obviously, is competition. If Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea are all genuinely in this race, Liverpool cannot drift. They need to be decisive. Supporters will hope Iraola has a clear idea of what he wants, and that the club backs him quickly.
