Now, Liverpool know they can secure a bit of a reduced fee here. Leverkusen are eager not to sell to Bayern Munich - something they may be forced into in 2026.
Getting this deal done to anyone but Bayern is in their best interest. It leaves them a little more flexible with the fee than most would be for a player of this magnitude.
So that, on its own, tells Liverpool Wirtz is worth more than they'll end up paying. But his stats tell them that, too.
Wirtz is an extraordinary player and we could go on and on about his incredible numbers here. Instead, we won't focus on the numbers specifically, but more about the difference between this season and the previous campaign.
Leverkusen were undefeated Bundesliga champions last season in a truly sensational campaign. Wirtz was at the centre of that but the big question facing teams was whether it could happen again.
After all, it was an unusually brilliant campaign and one that couldn't really be replicated. Only, Wirtz pretty much has.
22 goals and assists last season were followed by 22 goals and assists this season. His xG per 90 last season was 0.34 vs 0.36 this campaign.
It's a similar story for assists, too. 0.29 to 0.27. His shot-creating actions were at an incredible high last season of above 6.3 and while that's 'dropped' to 5.66 this term, that's still significantly higher than any Liverpool player.
And that's the real magic with Wirtz. Leverkusen have gotten worse this season, as expected, but his numbers have been the same or thereabouts. It suggests he improved in reaction to the team dropping off.
That's what will have Liverpool believing he's worth €100m and then some. A 22-year-old who produces some of the best numbers in Europe proving he's actually on an upward trend, and that the quality of the team doesn't appear to have much bearing on his output.
