Liverpool have reservations about appointing Xabi Alonso to replace Arne Slot this summer, despite the former midfielder emerging as a fan favourite for the role at Anfield.
According to AS, Liverpool have made discreet enquiries to Real Madrid about Alonso’s work and character.
The Reds continue to weigh up whether to entrust him with what insiders view as a multimillion-dollar rebuild that has failed to deliver this season.
Slot remains under pressure after a disappointing campaign in which Liverpool’s huge investment in the transfer market has not translated into success on the pitch.
The Reds spent heavily last summer in a bid to build on recent progress, but inconsistent performances and poor results have intensified scrutiny around the Dutchman.
Alonso has frequently been linked with the Liverpool job over recent months, with some influential former players and figures close to the club openly backing him.
There were even suggestions earlier in the season that Liverpool could move for him before the campaign ended, although those rumours eventually cooled.
Now, with the season about to conclude, Liverpool’s hierarchy is conducting background checks on several candidates before making a decision on Slot.
The Reds made a direct call to Real Madrid headquarters to gain insight into Alonso’s methods and his time with the Spanish giants before his departure in January.
Despite the strong emotional connection between Alonso and Liverpool supporters following his legendary playing career at Anfield, club officials remain unconvinced.
The uncertainty surrounding Alonso is also understood to be one reason why Liverpool previously paused discussions over dismissing Slot during difficult moments this season.
A decisive summer now awaits at Anfield, with the incredible Alonso firmly in the frame, but far from guaranteed to land the job.
Liverpool will also be wary of Chelsea. Per reports, he is their first choice target to replace Liam Rosenior this summer.
