Szoboszlai Central to Liverpool’s Midfield Future

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this report feels both exciting and slightly uncomfortable. Exciting because Adam Wharton looks like exactly the sort of midfielder Liverpool should be targeting, young, composed, intelligent and already Premier League proven. Uncomfortable because the numbers are enormous.

More than £70million for Wharton sounds steep, but that is the reality of the current market. If Liverpool believe he can become a mainstay for five or six years, the fee becomes easier to understand.

The bigger point is Szoboszlai. Liverpool cannot keep rebuilding by selling players who should be entering their prime. If Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and PSG are watching him, that should tell Liverpool something. He is the type of player elite clubs want because he has physical power, technical quality and room to grow.

Curtis Jones leaving would divide opinion. He is homegrown, technically gifted and still useful, but perhaps Liverpool are looking for a different midfield profile under Iraola.

Wharton, Szoboszlai and Gravenberch would be a fascinating foundation. It would not solve everything, but it would feel like a clear plan. After recent uncertainty, that alone would be welcome.
