Dutchman remains under pressure as Reds ‘line up replacements’ after subpar title defence

Liverpool manager Arne Slot is expected to remain in his post next season despite mounting reports to the contrary.

The Reds have endured a miserable campaign in this, Slot’s second season at the helm, and could finish their Premier League title defence as low as sixth in the table.

They also crashed out of the FA Cup in the quarter-finals, departed the Carabao Cup in the fourth round, and exited the Champions League with a whimper at the quarter-final stage.

Liverpool have Bournemouth breathing down their necks heading into the final day of the Premier League season, and reports emerged on Thursday suggesting the Reds might look to poach their manager.

Andoni Iraola will leave the Vitality stadium when his contract expires come the end of this season, and seems a suitable option for Liverpool given his penchant for fast-paced attacking football.

But those in the know insist the reports are not credible.

The Athletic’s James Pearce wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Liverpool’s position on Arne Slot remains unchanged - despite a day of social media rumours.”

Slot is expected to lead Liverpool into the new season, then, as he looks to restore the form which saw his side crowned Premier League champions in 2025.

He has faced several setbacks along the way, with injuries to his big-name summer signings and a petulant, underperforming Mohamed Salah doing plenty to undermine Slot’s authority.

Speaking after his side were subject to a damaging 4-2 defeat by Aston Villa last week, Slot said he needed fans to get behind the team as they host Brentford in their final match of the season if they are to reverse their fortunes.

“Our focus is on the Brentford game and making sure we earn the support of the fans by starting the game aggressive and well.

“The culmination of the fan support and a good performance will lead us to what we want to achieve and that is qualifying for the Champions League.

“In general teams struggle more away from home but for a top team like us it's far too many losses and dropped points.

“That hugely has to do with the way we concede is far too easy in general. We have chances but we've not been as clinical in fishing them this season as we were last season.

“It doesn't help that [Alexander] Isak has hardly played for us or that Hugo [Ekitike] has been unavailable. It is what it is. Next week, Brentford is where our focus is.”
