Alexander Isak, Julian Alvarez and Liverpool’s Alternatives in the Transfer Market

Liverpool’s search for a new centre-forward continues to circle around Alexander Isak, but the story has taken a dramatic turn. The Swedish international has publicly expressed discontent with Newcastle United, and his words have put fresh fuel on speculation about a potential move away from St James’ Park. Yet, while Isak dominates the headlines, Liverpool are quietly assessing their options – including Julian Alvarez and other alternatives – as the transfer window ticks towards its final days.

Isak’s fractured relationship with Newcastle

Isak’s future at Newcastle has been thrown into doubt after he shared a strongly worded Instagram story suggesting his trust in the club hierarchy had broken down. He stated that “promises have been broken” and “trust has been lost,” adding that a change would be in everyone’s best interests.

Newcastle responded swiftly, denying that any such commitments were made regarding a summer departure. They remain determined to reintegrate the striker and insist the conditions for a sale have not materialised. The situation leaves Liverpool monitoring closely but with little control, as Newcastle are resolute in keeping their star forward.

With less than two weeks of the transfer window remaining, Liverpool face the prospect of either making a decisive move for Isak or turning their attention elsewhere.

Alvarez considered but far from straightforward

Julian Alvarez’s name has been consistently linked with Liverpool. The Argentinian forward enjoyed an outstanding first campaign at Atletico Madrid, scoring 29 goals in all competitions. Yet despite his success, reports in Spain suggest he has grown frustrated with his role under Diego Simeone, having been played out of position on several occasions.

His entourage is believed to question whether his £82 million switch from Manchester City in 2024 was the right decision, though any change in circumstances will depend on Atletico’s stance. The Spanish side value Alvarez highly and still view him as a long-term investment, making negotiations difficult.

Liverpool will not have forgotten Alvarez’s Premier League pedigree either. In his final season at Manchester City, the 25-year-old contributed 19 goals and 14 assists, showcasing both productivity and versatility. However, any potential move would almost certainly require a fee surpassing what Atletico paid only a year ago.

Alternatives to Isak and Alvarez

Liverpool’s recruitment team are mindful of the time constraints and know they cannot be left empty-handed. Isak is a marquee target, Alvarez represents proven quality, but contingency planning is essential.

The challenge lies in sourcing a forward who can lead the line at Anfield while complementing the existing attack. With the market inflated and top strikers tied down to long-term deals, the pool of realistic alternatives is shrinking by the day. Names will continue to surface, but unless Liverpool move decisively, their pursuit of a centre-forward could stretch into a stand-off that leaves them without reinforcements.

Transfer clock running down

Liverpool have shown a willingness to invest heavily, with financial resources reportedly available to cross the £100 million threshold for Isak. If that path is blocked, similar backing could be redirected towards Alvarez or another high-level forward.

Time is short, though. Each passing day reduces Liverpool’s leverage, while Newcastle and Atletico hold firm on two of the most coveted strikers in Europe. For Liverpool, the next fortnight could define not only this transfer window but also their ambitions for the season ahead.
