Liverpool are negotiating a new deal with Dominik Szoboszlai, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Szoboszlai has a contract that expires in 2028, and they are looking to tie him down following an impressive 2025/26 campaign.

The Liverpool midfielder has been outstanding this term, bagging five goals in 31 Premier League outings.

The 25-year-old has also deputised adeptly at right-back with injury and form issues hindering Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley and Calvin Ramsay.

Szoboszlai is the favourite for the club’s Player of the Season award, and the club is right to reward him with a new deal.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has praised the 63-cap Hungarian international’s showings this season.

Slot said (via TNT Sports), “Dominik has a lot of qualities. He is an all-round player, an all-round midfielder, a modern midfielder in my opinion.

“Last season he was already very good – mainly off the ball, a bit on the ball – and I think this season he has improved his game on the ball.

“Off the ball, he is top three, four or five in the world, and (he is) maybe the best in the world in terms of pressing.”

However, Liverpool may need to carefully consider how to maximise Szoboszlai’s long-term potential.

While his performance at right-back has been admirable, his place is in midfield, where his pressing, ball-carrying and creativity can influence games in the final third.

That could force the Reds into the market for a natural right-back this summer, allowing Szoboszlai to return to his preferred role permanently.

Oscar Mingueza, who is set to become a free agent, could be an option.

The Spaniard offers versatility, technical security and top-level experience, making him a low-risk, high-upside addition.
