Liverpool are now even closer to completing a deal for their main target in the January window.
Antoine Semenyo is a name that is drawing eyebrows from the Liverpool fanbase right now. Amid the club’s current crisis, a lot of fans are questioning whether an attacker is really the area that Liverpool need to invest in right now.
However, context is important. Liverpool don’t do panic buys. They will have targets for other positions. The question though is whether those targets will be available in the January window or not.
The answer for that is probably a no. If we are thinking about the likes of Adam Wharton or Elliot Anderson the chances are their clubs won’t want to lose them.
Even someone like Marc Guehi is better off waiting for an offer as a free agent.
This isn’t the case with Semenyo.
As it’s becoming very clear, he is available in the January window. Semenyo almost left Bournemouth in the summer.
But he signed a new contract instead and now it’s been confirmed by The Athletic that this contract included a £65m release clause that can be activated in the upcoming winter window.
At that price, Semenyo is an absolute bargain. Looking around the Premier League, you won’t be able to find many players of his profile and age, who are as good as him and who would cost so little.
Now is Semenyo someone Liverpool need immediately? Probably not. However, as Arne Slot’s side transition to a post-Salah era, they are going to need a player like Semenyo.
