Liverpool may have been given fresh hope in their pursuit of French winger Bradley Barcola.
According to L’Equipe, the former Olympique Lyon forward has hit a brick wall in contract negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain.
The 23-year-old winger was in high demand last summer, and Liverpool were among the clubs interested in prising him away from the French capital.
Bayern Munich were also linked with a move for the Frenchman, but they ultimately opted to sign Liverpool winger Luis Diaz in a big-money deal worth €75 million (£61m).
The Reds had identified Barcola as the ideal replacement for the Colombian forward, but PSG showed no interest in doing business.
Barcola’s long-term future at PSG was hanging in the balance as he struggled for opportunities. The rumours linking him with a PSG exit have resurfaced once again.
Liverpool are short of options on the left flank. Cody Gakpo is the only senior left winger in Arne Slot’s squad, although they have highly-rated prodigy Rio Ngumoha as back-up.
Rather than reinvesting the proceeds from Diaz’s sale, Liverpool opted to spend a whopping £125m to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.
However, their interest in Barcola remains strong, and they could reignite their pursuit if Barcola and PSG fail to find common ground.
Since Khvicha Kvaratskhelia joined PSG in January, Barcola’s spot in the starting line-up is no longer guaranteed.
Luis Enrique prefers a front three of Kvaratskhelia, Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, and Desire Doue, which leaves Barcola out in the cold more often than not.
Barcola has featured predominantly for PSG this season, while Dembele, Kvaratskhelia and Doue have struggled with injuries.
PSG want to prove to him that he’s still a key part of their long-term plans by offering him a new deal, but they have yet to see eye-to-eye on the details of the contract.
