Liverpool have been placed on red alert after David Ornstein dropped a bombshell update on Antoine Semenyo’s contract details at Bournemouth.
According to The Athletic reporter, the 25-year-old forward, who has been a long-term Liverpool target, has a £65 million release clause in his contract and is available to any club as early as January.
The Reds are known admirers of Semenyo, and many believe he could be a long-term successor to Mohamed Salah. But they could have a huge battle on their hands as they look to lure him to Anfield.
Liverpool were one of several clubs that raided Bournemouth last summer, snapping up left back Milos Kerkez in a £40m deal.
There’s a decent chance they could return to the South Coast club to poach another one of their key players just six months later.
Semenyo has been in fantastic form for the Cherries this season, notching six goals and three assists in 11 Premier League outings.
The lethal forward is capable of playing on either flank and could easily fill the void left by Luis Diaz’s summer move to Bayern Munich.
Bournemouth have reluctantly accepted that they could struggle to keep Semenyo until the end of the season.
They managed to keep him tied to the club despite last summer’s mass exodus, but their efforts could be undone if Liverpool decide to make their move in January.
With Semenyo’s contract details now public knowledge, Liverpool will likely be rivalled by clubs in the Premier League and abroad who also have the Ghanian on their radar.
Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur tried to lure him away from the Vitality Stadium last summer but failed in their attempts.
Potential suitors were told that it would take up to £70m to sign Semenyo last summer.
However, interested clubs will likely reignite their interest now that the clause has been revealed, so Liverpool may need to prepare for a bidding war.
