Liverpool are a step closer to accomplishing a dream summer transfer deal.

Even after spending £450m last summer, Richard Hughes is about to embark on yet another testing window where Liverpool are going to have to strengthen in key areas again.

Liverpool may need to sign at least two new wingers if Mo Salah leaves, which is a possibility. But if he stays, the Reds are still short of options having never replaced Luis Diaz in the first place.

In addition to the forward line, strengthening the midfield could also be a priority. Liverpool’s style relies on energetic and technically strong midfielders, and they need to add more creativity to the squad, as well as a holding midfielder.

However, the defence might be the most urgent area to address. Uncertainty around players such as Ibrahima Konate, along with the long-term futures of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, could force Liverpool to bring in new centre-backs.

For the defence, Liverpool need to build for the future. They've already signed Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni but they need to sign another player in Luka Vuskovic, who could become one of the best centre-backs in the world and ultimately replace Van Dijk in the future.

Vuskovic emerged as a 16-year-old playing in the eternal derby at Croatia and catching the eye. Back then in 2023, over three years ago Liverpool already had the chance to secure his services.

They didn't. Instead, Tottenham signed Vuskovic and have been building his career ever since. Currently he is on loan at Hamburg where he is already becoming the best defender in the Bundesliga at just 18-years-old.

Vuskovic ranks among the top five centre-backs for defensive duels won (75%), aerial duels won (65%) and interceptions (6.02 per 90 minutes).

He is an incredibly talented defender who can play across the defensive line, even as a full-back but most importantly both as a left-sided and right-sided centre-back.

In terms of his ability, it's remarkable what he is doing at his age. Vuskovic's reading of the game is elite. He is incredibly strong in the air and already very physical.

On top of that he has this poise and composure on the ball. He's constantly looking to play vertically.

And then there is his aerial threat. Vuskovic has incredible power, and he can score a lot of goals. He scored seven goals in the Jupiler Pro League last season and has scored four in the Bundesliga.

In essence, he is perfect. Probably the dream signing.

Normally, Tottenham would never even entertain the idea of selling their prized asset to Liverpool. However, with another defeat on Thursday night dooming them to just one point above safety in the Premier League and there being a genuine chance of Spurs going down, and thus Liverpool being able to pull of a move for Vuskovic.

After a dire season like that, Tottenham will be forced to sell. So, to put it succinctly, their defeat to Crystal Palace has just put Liverpool a closer to achieving the ultimate transfer this summer.
