Liverpool have been tipped to complete a midfield overhaul this summer.
There are questions to answer in the case of Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones in particular. Macca, 27, is under contract until 2028 but unusually for Liverpool there have been no talks scheduled for a new deal.
Without an agreement over new terms it would be no surprise to see the Argentina FIFA World Cup winner be sold. Jones looks set for an immediate exit with Inter Milan in the hunt to sign the homegrown playmaker.
So long as the Italian champions bridge the gap between their current £20m offer and Liverpool’s £35m valuation then the England man will be off.
And that brings us to contenders to come into Anfield.
The focus is still very much on adding wingers - with Victor Munoz crossed off and the pursuit of Yan Diomande still very much on.
But once sporting director Richard Hughes gets what he is looking for in attack then we could see the outgoing Premier League champions turn to new midfielders once again.
One contender to arrive according to a report in Sport Witness is Allan of Palmeiras. Liverpool have been joined by Fulham - as well as Newcastle and Manchester United for the young Brazilian talent.
And following transfer wins against the Geordies for both Hugo Ekitike and Victor Munoz the Anfield side could once again snare a Newcastle target.
“Newcastle have long been viewed as the strongest contenders,” the report reads.
“Liverpool retain a serious interest and Manchester United have recently been credited with entering the picture.
“Fulham recently sent a scout to Palmeiras’ training centre to watch Allan and discuss the possibility of a future transfer.”
Liverpool were reported to be keen on adding Allan back in January but ultimately no deal could be concluded. Nonetheless club recruiters have been working long and hard on a deal for the left-footed talent and we could see it all come to fruition soon.
“Liverpool also remain firmly in the background,” the report reads.
“The Reds have tracked Allan for a long time. They have explored different ways of structuring a potential deal, including the possibility of waiting until after the World Cup.”
Allan Andrade Elias is a 21-year-old left-footed attacking midfielder for Palmeiras, a Cria da Academia who operates between the lines, combines well in tight spaces and offers final-third punch with late box arrivals and set-piece threat.
He has already logged over 60 senior appearances for Verdão, contributing double-digit goal involvements and emerging as one of the headline talents of the current Brazilian generation.
Stylistically, Allan profiles as a modern hybrid 8/10: he can drop to link play in the left half-space, accelerate attacks with carries and incisive passing, and then arrive as a secondary finisher, while his defensive work-rate and physical development have been highlighted as key parts of his evolution in the professional side.
His ball-striking from distance and dead balls adds a further layer of threat, making him a natural focal point for Palmeiras’ attacking structure.
Contractually, Allan is locked in on a long-term deal to December 31, 2029, after successive renewals that underline Palmeiras’ intent to build around him and protect his value, with further talks about improved salary and a potentially higher release clause already underway.
Multiple Premier League clubs (including Newcastle and Aston Villa), Liverpool, Napoli and Zenit have tested the waters with bids up to around 35–40 million euros plus bonuses, all rejected so far, suggesting any medium-term move is most likely to a top-five European league club willing to pay an “A-tier” South American talent fee once Palmeiras decide the timing is right.
