Liverpool have got an emerging contract priority in the shape of midfield star Dominik Szoboszlai.
While the focus has been on players whose terms expire in 2026 - namely Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson - the situation involving Szoboszlai has been going on in the background.
But what exactly is the issue? The 25-year-old joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig back in 2023 for around £60m. He signed a five-year deal at Anfield - for around £120k per week.
That might have represented fair value in the market for an emerging player not yet proven in the Premier League. But right now the Hungary captain is holding Liverpool together.
Throughout an indifferent spell - which has seen Liverpool slump to eighth in the Premier League table - Szoboszlai has kept his performance levels high.
You could describe him as Arne Slot’s most important player - with the Reds’ head coach using him at attacking midfield, defensive midfield, right-back and No10 so far this season.
Factor in his performances during the 2024/25 Premier League title win and you can see why Szoboszlai is so highly rated inside the club and from outside.
There are transfer links beginning to appear with Real Madrid and Manchester City - two clubs who could easily catapult Szoboszlai into their categories of top earners.
Although there is no immediate danger of losing Szoboszlai, he is entitled to be paid what he’s worth. And if he bides his time he can indeed put the club under pressure for a renewal.
After this season he will only have two more years left to run on his current deal and he will still very much be a peak-age player when he’s due to leave.
A report in AS now claims that the club have got “concerns” over Szoboszlai’s level of pay - and are preparing to offer him a contract extension on closer to the money that he’s worth.
“Real Madrid and Manchester City are closely monitoring Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, and the Reds are increasingly concerned about his contract situation and his long-term future at Anfield,” the report reads.
“The 25-year-old currently earns 130,000 euros a week, a negligible figure compared to players in the same position at other top European clubs: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid): around 400,000 per week, Bernardo Silva (Man City) 300,000 per week, Bruno Fernandes (Man United): 300,000 per week, Jamal Musiala (Bayern): around 360,000 per week.
“Liverpool are interested in renewing his contract long-term - until 2030 - and rewarding his excellent performance with a pay raise.”
Liverpool would probably have to put Szoboszlai just behind Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah in the pecking order - meaning a contract worth over £250k per week.
He could earn that elsewhere as Szoboszlai has put himself among the top bracket of midfielder in the Premier League and Europe over the past year.
Let’s hope these concerns can be put to bed soon and Szoboszlai inks his renewal.
