Liverpool pulled off one of the coups of the 2025 summer transfer window.

The Reds’ former sporting director Richard Hughes orchestrated the signing of in a £116m deal from Bayer Leverkusen.

The then-Premier League champions pulled ahead of both Manchester City and Bayern Munich in landing the Germany playmaker.

It established their credentials as an elite destination for top-tier talent with others following since in the shape of Alexander Isak and Bradley Barcola.

Things not going to plan for Wirtz

The only issue is things haven’t exactly gone to plan for Wirtz.

The 23-year-old has been a peripheral figure at Anfield - although there have been signs of encouragement under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

Wirtz’s output remains low however - with one assist and zero goals registered so far this season.

Now a report in TEAMtalk has revealed that the jury is out on Wirtz inside Anfield with a move to Bayern Munich shaping up as a possibility at the end of the season.

LFC expressing doubts over Wirtz

The midfielder is under contract on Merseyside until 2030 but the Reds’ decision-makers are watching carefully in case Wirtz cannot hit the expected high notes this term.

“There are some within Liverpool who have concerns over whether Wirtz can reach the extraordinary levels expected of him when the club committed £116m to his signing,” the report reads.

“The expectation is that Iraola will be given the season to work with Wirtz and demonstrate that the German can become a cornerstone of the new Liverpool project.”

Bayern lying in wait for Wirtz deal

Bayern were second-best in the race to Wirtz - admitting defeat after Arne Slot sold his Liverpool project to Wirtz.

But it’s not working out with Wirtz as the central playmaker and that could open the door for FC Hollywood to make a bid.

“Bayern remain firmly in the picture and are continuing to monitor developments closely,” the report reads.

“Their admiration for Wirtz has not diminished despite his difficult first season in England, and the Bundesliga giants are well aware that his situation could become more interesting if he fails to reach the levels Liverpool expect during the current campaign.

“His position will be revisited at the end of the season if the expected improvement does not materialise.

“Should doubts over his suitability or his ability to reach the required level persist, the German champions will be among the clubs watching closely.”
