Liverpool ready to test Barcelona again with January move for La Masia graduate | OneFootball

Liverpool could return to FC Barcelona for another defensive reinforcement just months after taking Ronald Araujo on loan from the Catalan club.

The Premier League side are now being linked with Alejandro Balde ahead of the January transfer window, with the 22-year-old facing an increasingly uncertain future under Hansi Flick. According to AS, Liverpool are among several clubs monitoring the left-back, alongside Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.

The academy graduate entered the season determined to fight for his place, but he has struggled to break into Flick’s preferred XI. Xavi Espart has moved ahead of him at left-back, while Joao Cancelo provides another senior option in the same area. As a result, Balde has been restricted to a very limited role so far.

A new challenge in England?

That lack of minutes has inevitably fuelled speculation over a January departure and Liverpool’s interest adds another layer because of their recent business with Barça. Araujo moved to Anfield on loan in the summer, and the English club could now test Barcelona’s resolve again if Balde remains outside Flick’s plans.

From the player’s perspective, the appeal is understandable and a move to Liverpool would offer a fresh start in the Premier League and the chance to work under Andoni Iraola, while reuniting him with Araujo would also provide a familiar presence.

Barcelona, however, face a more complicated decision as Balde is still only 22, has come through La Masia and retains qualities that are difficult to replace, particularly his acceleration and ability to carry the ball from deep. Selling him midway through the season could prove short-sighted if injuries or fixture congestion alter Flick’s defensive hierarchy.

At the same time, strong interest would be difficult to dismiss if Balde remains peripheral. PSG are reportedly considering an offer in the region of €40 million, and Liverpool’s involvement could strengthen Barcelona’s negotiating position if a bidding situation develops.

For now, Balde still has time to change his standing before January but Liverpool’s interest ensures the pressure will not disappear. After taking Araujo in the summer, the Reds may soon be back at Barcelona’s door.
