Liverpool have sacked head coach Arne Slot after two seasons, a year after lifting the Premier League title.

The club said in a statement on Saturday that he leaves with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is under way. Slot arrived in the summer of 2024.

His debut campaign ended in triumph as Liverpool were crowned champions of England. The following season brought a fifth-place finish in the Premier League and a Champions League quarter-final exit to PSG, losing both legs 0-2.

Given the club’s ambitions, those results were deemed insufficient and change was presented as necessary to keep Liverpool moving forward.

Off the pitch, the season was marked by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota in July, a deeply felt loss across the club.

There were also strong tensions between Slot and Mohamed Salah, who complained of being sidelined from the group, including in the Champions League.

Liverpool praised their manager’s compassion and humanity during those difficult periods and now look to regain the summit of English and European football.
