Liverpool Receive Jeremy Jacquet Fitness Update Ahead of AS Monaco Clash

Liverpool’s preparations for the new season have been boosted by the return of several key players, but one notable absence continues to create questions for Andoni Iraola. According to the Liverpool Echo, new signing Jeremy Jacquet remains unavailable, with the French defender yet to make his first appearance for the club.

Jacquet arrived from Rennes after Liverpool agreed a deal in January, with the 21 year old viewed as a major investment in the future of the defence. However, his pre season has been disrupted by discomfort, leaving the Reds cautious over his return ahead of the meeting with AS Monaco.

Jacquet Absence Raises Liverpool Defensive Questions

Liverpool returned from their United States tour and quickly resumed work at the AXA Training Centre, with Iraola welcoming back several senior figures including Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Alisson Becker and new arrival Victor Munoz.

Jeremie Frimpong also returned to training after concerns following his withdrawal during the final friendly against Leeds United. The right back’s availability represents a positive step for Liverpool, but the continued absence of Jacquet remains a talking point.

The former Rennes defender started pre season strongly but has since been managed carefully after reporting discomfort. Having missed Liverpool’s three matches in America, Jacquet is still waiting for his first opportunity to play under Iraola.

The Liverpool head coach explained the situation, saying: “With Jeremy we still don’t know if it’s worth it or not to put him in against Leeds. He did the first part of the pre season, let’s say, very well. Now he’s feeling some discomfort, so we don’t want to rush him. He comes from a lot of months without playing.

“And obviously I would like to try with him with Virgil [van Dijk] when he recovers, because with the injury of Joe we’ve been without senior centre backs. But we have to be careful with Jeremy, yes.”

AS Monaco Fixture Provides Possible Return Opportunity

The upcoming AS Monaco fixture could provide Liverpool with another opportunity to assess Jacquet’s fitness, although there will be no pressure placed on the defender to return before he is ready.

Liverpool’s defensive situation has become more complicated during pre season. Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni remain sidelined, while academy defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe will miss the Premier League opener against Newcastle United after being unable to secure a UK work permit.

The Austrian youngster is expected to continue his development with a European loan move, leaving Liverpool with reduced options in defensive areas.

For Iraola, the priority is ensuring Jacquet is fully prepared rather than forcing an early comeback. The defender arrived with significant expectations following his move from Rennes, and Liverpool will want him available for the long term rather than risk further setbacks.

Liverpool Transfer Plans Could Change

At present, Liverpool are not actively looking to add another centre back before the transfer window closes. The club remain confident in their existing options, particularly with Van Dijk leading the defensive line.

However, injuries have tested the squad depth earlier than expected. If Gomez, Leoni and Jacquet continue to face delays, Liverpool may have to reconsider their position before deadline day.

Jacquet’s arrival was designed to strengthen Liverpool’s defensive future, and supporters will be eager to see him partner with Van Dijk under Iraola. The immediate focus, though, remains patience and ensuring the French defender reaches full fitness before making his competitive debut.
