As the summer transfer window edges closer, Liverpool are reportedly preparing to re-ignite their long-standing interest in Sporting Lisbon defender Gonçalo Inácio. According to CaughtOffside, the Reds are among several Premier League clubs keen on the Portuguese international, with Manchester United and Newcastle also circling.
Inácio, who helped Sporting to a domestic double and played a key role in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League triumph this year, has once again emerged as a potential solution to Liverpool’s evolving centre-back dilemma. Valued at £51 million, the 23-year-old could be available for slightly less as Sporting weigh up their options.
Liverpool’s interest comes amidst uncertainty over the futures of Ibrahima Konaté and Jarell Quansah. Konaté’s contract situation remains unresolved, while Quansah is rumoured to be a target for Bayer Leverkusen. Should either depart, a move for Inácio would signal clear intent from new sporting director Richard Hughes and manager Arne Slot, who is fresh off delivering a Premier League title in his debut campaign.
The CaughtOffside article states: “Liverpool could be set to resurrect their previous interest in a player who’s been a regular presence in the Anfield rumour mill in recent transfer windows.” That player, of course, is Inácio, whose name has featured prominently in Reds-related transfer talk since 2022.

It’s not just the honours that make Inácio stand out. His statistical output places him among Europe’s elite. FBref data highlights his impressive numbers over the last 12 months, where he ranks in the top 5% of centre-backs for non-penalty goals (0.12), non-penalty xG (0.1), shot-creating actions (1.72) and progressive passes (7.34) per 90 minutes.
Additionally, he features in the top 10% for assists (0.08) and progressive carries (1.28), underlining his all-round qualities. As CaughtOffside put it: “With his calmness in playing out from the back and his penchant for a goal… Inácio bears the hallmarks of a younger version of Virgil van Dijk.”
He’s composed, two-footed and technically assured. In many ways, he fits the profile Liverpool have prioritised under both Klopp and now Slot – defenders who can dominate physically but also dictate rhythm from deep.
With multiple clubs in pursuit, time is of the essence. Manchester United’s interest in Inácio should serve as a warning. Liverpool cannot afford to miss out on another top-tier defensive talent. As CaughtOffside rightly concluded: “Richard Hughes, please do not let this majestic defender go to Old Trafford or St James’ Park if you can help it!”
Slot’s tactical demands mean ball-playing centre-backs are no longer a luxury, they are essential. And in Gonçalo Inácio, Liverpool may well have found the heir apparent to Van Dijk’s throne – a player with the numbers, silverware and style to anchor the defence for years to come.
If this deal happens, it could be the signing of the summer. Imagine a player who’s 23, already has three trophies in 2025, and matches elite centre-backs for attacking output, passing and ball progression. That’s not just a prospect, that’s a necessity.
Liverpool fans will be salivating at the idea of Inácio in red. With Konaté’s injury record and Quansah still maturing, bringing in a left-footed ball-playing defender is both smart and proactive. The idea that he could be available for under £51 million, especially in today’s inflated market, feels like an opportunity too good to pass up.
Inácio has presence, reads the game like a seasoned pro, and importantly, scores goals. That’s rare in defenders. His numbers scream modern centre-back, and if Slot wants to build a long-term dynasty at Anfield, Inácio is exactly the kind of player you need.
Reds fans remember what happened when Van Dijk came in – it transformed everything. Inácio won’t just be cover. He could be the next colossus.
