Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid is nearly complete – but not signed. The England right-back, whose contract with Liverpool ends on 30 June, has rejected multiple renewal offers from the club and is on his way to Spain.

While Liverpool still hold out faint hope of keeping him, the reality is that Real Madrid are preparing to finalise his signing imminently.

The main concern for Madrid now is timing – specifically, whether they can register Alexander-Arnold in time for the FIFA Club World Cup, which begins on 14 June. After all, his Liverpool contract runs until the end of the month.

Liverpool willing to let Alexander-Arnold before Club World Cup

According to AS, Liverpool would not object to an early release of Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid – but only under certain conditions.

The first and most obvious condition is that the 26-year-old right-back must personally request the early release. Despite the imminent exit, the relationship between the player and Liverpool remains positive.

However, Liverpool are aware that he would be leaving without generating a transfer fee. As such, they expect the player to forgo his June salary – an amount just under €1 million – as a gesture of goodwill.

The second condition involves Real Madrid. While not mandatory, Liverpool would expect a small compensation fee in return for releasing Alexander-Arnold early.

This would not be a large sum – estimated below €1 million – given that Liverpool would save on salary costs and receive something in return for a player departing on a free.

In total, Alexander-Arnold’s early release could cost Real Madrid between €1.5 and €2 million.

The final step

Once that is done, the final stage for Madrid would be formal registration. FIFA has opened two additional transfer windows for Club World Cup participants: the first from 1 to 10 June, and the second from 27 June to 3 July, specifically for quarter-finalists.

Real Madrid are targeting the earlier window, as they are set to start their journey in the tournament on 18 June against Al Hilal.

Although Dani Carvajal may be available, he is returning from a long injury spell. As such, Alexander-Arnold is viewed as both a solution for the immediate and long-term future.
